First Aid for Pharmacists Course

As part of their pre-registration training year, graduate pharmacy students need to be able to both understand how to deal with common first aid emergencies, but also demonstrate these skills. This is because the public has an expectation that pharmacists can act appropriately in an emergency situation, but also because pharmacists are increasingly involved in sophisticated services such as phlebotomy services and influenza vaccinations. These first aid competencies should ideally be maintained by qualified pharmacists.

The pre-registration syllabus for first aid is comprehensive, mapping the 18 hour First Aid at Work (FAW) course, however, delivery of an FAW course as part of a training package is not always an option. With the advent of the new one day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course, the opportunity has arisen for graduates to receive a Health and Safety Executive approved qualification, with additional competencies being covered by pre-course reading and knowledge assessment.

The First Aid for Pharmacists course is a one day course that delivers life-saving skills to help pharmacists deal with emergency situations. Delivered by experienced trainers, who are registered pharmacists, as well as first aiders, the course is contextualised to the pharmacy setting and helps pharmacists understand their role in first aid provision.
