Delegates completed the 12 hour course to meet the needs of the day nursery sector in order to fulfill the duty of care requirements that looking after others entails. In completing the course they also satisfy Ofsted requirements and Early Years Foundation Stage regulatory requirements.

Delegates enjoyed the course and welcomed its practical nature using baby and child manikins as it gave them lots of opportunity to practice, and gain competency and confidence in their first aid skills relevant to the age groups they deal with.

To become an ITC First Aid Trainer you will need to:

• Attend a 2 day First Aid Trainer Induction Course.
• Hold a current First Aid at Work certificate.
• Hold a current teaching qualification. The minimum qualification that will be accepted is a level 3 certificate in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS Award) or equivalent.
• Prepare a scheme of work and lessons plans for the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course.
• Be assessed as being able to teach and assess the EFAW course.

Once you have successfully completed the First Aid Trainer Induction Course, you will receive all the resources you need to learn how to deliver the EFAW course, including a trainers pack, a DVD detailing the elements of the course and teaching notes.

Within three months of attending the First Aid Trainer Induction Course you will need to teach the EFAW course to a group of eight people, making appropriate assessment decisions. This will be overseen by a senior trainer and your performance assessed throughout.

This will involve you first observing these courses and then assisting in their delivery. Once you have gained sufficient experience your will be assessed delivering a course by an experience trainer.

What will it cost me?

The First Aid trainer induction course will cost you £490+vat. This includes support and all of the resources you need to plan an EFAW course. There will be an additional cost of £250+vat for your EFAW assessment, however, this can be be split between 2 trainees, i.e. two trainees delivering to a course of 8 people. If the initial EFAW assessment is failed, there will be an additional cost per assessment. You will also need to arrange  insurance and purchase equipment.

Employers have to risk assess their workplace first aid requirements, and the 1-day Emergency FirstAid at Work (EFAW) qualification is one of the statutory qualifications for this purpose. All candidates must attend the full 6-hours contact time in order to fulfill the qualification ‘license to practice’ requirement. As well as a full attendance requirement each candidate is continually assessed on each section of the programme.

With modern mobile communication, modern emergency service response times and the changing face of UK employment from a manufacturing to a service economy, first aid need have changed. If the risk assessment is that employees may be faced with life-threatening incidents where they have to manage the casualty for 10 minutes, or very minor incident that will not require medical assistance, then the EFAW is the course that meets the criteria. For other potential first aid circumstances the employee can phone for help and medical assistance.

The qualification has been developed with the support of the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)  and is designed to meet the needs of those working away from immediate assistance in the remote regions of the UK and is used by many who are based abroad and is the course of choice for experienced practitioners who use the outdoors.

The people attending the course also needed and Emergency First Aid at Work certificate and we were able to integrate this award into the two days comparing and contrasting what is different in the urban context when appropriate, giving the first aider a clear understanding of their first aid roles in urban and outdoor settings.
