The BHF is launching a campaign to teach all children CPR in schools. This campaign complements that featuring Vinnie Jones, doing ‘hand-only’ CPR, with the aim of helping more people survive a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting. The BHF estimate that 27,000 people die each year from arrest outside of hospital and that if more people knew how to act quickly and appropriately that number could be cut.

The Department for Education says that it is the choice of individual head teachers to decide if they want to teach children at their school how to do CPR.

Sign the BHF online petition here.

Stockwood Consulting has been active with a number of local schools in Market Harborough and Leicester, and we are keen to see this initiative supported. We have taught CPR and other first aid skills to cub groups and young sports coaches and believe that young people are more than capable of making appropriate life saving choices when needed. We have a range of training materials available, suitable for children from key stage two. Please contact us for more details.

Open courses, such as these are interesting due to the mix of people that attend, and today was no exception, with a fun group who all got along together really well. Once again all the delegates demonstrated excellent first aid skills, in the relaxed and happy atmosphere that is synonomous with our courses and style of delivery.

Thank you all for making the day a success.

A binman from Middlesborough has received an award from the Royal Humane Society after he saved the life of a toddler. Mr Thompson, who had recently completed a two day first aid course with Middlesborough Council, confessed that he would not have known what to do if he had not been on the course. Mt Thompson is now urging others to learn first aid. Read more about this story here.

Whilst many people learn first aid for work purposes, many people will end up using the skills acquired in a personal capacity, helping friends and family at home. First aid is a ‘life-skill’ and simple interventions can make huge differences.

Learn to save lives and help others by booking onto one of our local first aid training courses in Leicester, Market Harborough or Northampton.

The ASA said that people complained because they said that the advert showed the wrong technique for CPR, however, the ASA said that the advert had been produced with help from the Resuscitation Council (UK) and was in line with the European Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

The advert was run by the British Heart Foundation to try to improve survival rates for people suffering cardiac arrest outside of hospital, rates that have been described as “appalling” at under 10%. More information on the story can be found here.

At Stockwood Consulting we have consistently taught that ‘hands-only’ CPR is always an option for first-aiders, and that it is an option for a first-aider who needs to coach a passer-by to assist with CPR. Any initiative that empowers people to intervene, or gives them the confidence to attempt CPR, should be applauded.

Why not book onto one of our first aid training courses running in Market Harborough, Leicester and Northamptonshire to either learn CPR or refresh your technique.

Prince Harry rushed to the aid of an injured polo player after he was knocked off his horse. As the first on the scene, he gently placed the American business man, Bash Kazi, into the recovery position, potentially saving the Mr Kazi’s life.

Actions such as this really help to raise awareness of the importance of acting quickly and correctly in emergency situations. The correct use of the recovery position is taught in both workplace and sports first aid courses, and whilst polo is not the most regularly played sport, in Market Harborough or Leicester, the example set by Prince Harry is applicable in many other first aid situations.

The full story can be read here.
