The Department for Education says that it is the choice of individual head teachers to decide if they want to teach children at their school how to do CPR.

Stockwood Consulting has been active with a number of local schools in Market Harborough and Leicester, and we are keen to see this initiative supported. Open courses, such as these are interesting due to the mix of people that attend, and today was no exception, with a fun group who all got along together really well. Once again all the delegates demonstrated excellent first aid skills, in the relaxed and happy atmosphere that is synonomous with our courses and style of delivery.

Whilst many people learn first aid for work purposes, many people will end up using the skills acquired in a personal capacity, helping friends and family at home. First aid is a ‘life-skill’ and simple interventions can make huge differences.

The advert was run by the British Heart Foundation to try to improve survival rates for people suffering cardiac arrest outside of hospital, rates that have been described as “appalling” at under 10%. More information on the story can be found here.

At Stockwood Consulting we have consistently taught that ‘hands-only’ CPR is always an option for first-aiders, and that it is an option for a first-aider who needs to coach a passer-by to assist with CPR. Any initiative that empowers people to intervene, or gives them the confidence to attempt CPR, should be applauded.

“From 6 April 2012, subject to Parliamentary approval, RIDDOR’s over three day injury reporting requirement will change. From then the trigger point for reporting injuries to HSE will increase from over three days’ to over seven days’ incapacitation (not counting the day on which the accident happened). However, under EU law, businesses will still be required to keep internal records of incidents resulting in an absence of over three days.”

This information will be included in all our First Aid at Work (FAW) and Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) courses, and workplace first-aiders need to ensure that they are aware of the changes.

Actions such as this really help to raise awareness of the importance of acting quickly and correctly in emergency situations. The correct use of the recovery position is taught in both workplace and sports first aid courses, and whilst polo is not the most regularly played sport, in Market Harborough or Leicester, the example set by Prince Harry is applicable in many other first aid situations.
