This is a three day (18 hour) first aid course, aimed at equipping the first aider with a range of skills to deal with emergency situations, as well as managing a range of illnesses and injuries. The three day course follows the EFAW course syllabus for the first day, expanding on the skills acquired on days two and three.
3-day FAW Programme
First 6-hours content is EFAW
On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:
Understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
– the importance of preventing cross infection
– the need for recording incidents and actions
– use of available equipment
Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR
Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).
Further 12 hours content for FAW
Provide emergency first aid at work (see above)
Administer first aid to a casualty with
– injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries
– chest injuries
– burns and scalds
– eye injuries
– sudden poisoning
– anaphylactic shock
Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes).
External examination of candidates.
Revalidation
The full First Aid at Work qualification is revalidated by completing a 12-hour Revalidation First Aid at Work (FAWR) course, providing the FAW certificate is within its valid lifetime. (The FAWR qualification can be taken up to 3 months before date of expiry or within 28 days past expiry of FAW).
