SCL has just completed a second year of delivering first aid training to pre-registration pharmacists from hospitals across the East Midlands area, including Northampton, Leicester, Chesterfield, Lincoln, Derby and Nottingham.
First aid competencies are part of the syllabus for their training and for two years now SCL has delivered the Health and Safety Approved (HSE) approved Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course, as well as covering other areas of competency. As practicing Pharmacists, as well as first aiders, we believe that we can understand and deal with the legal and ethical dilemmas that can face pharmacists when providing first aid. We are also able to make the course technical enough to appeal to candidates coming from a pharmacy background, without straying from basic first aid principles.
A total of 43 pre-registration pharmacists, and their tutors, successfully completed the course over two days and will receive an HSE approved EFAW award. Feedback was fantastic with candidates commenting that the course was the best first aid course they had been on, was motivational and informative, and that they felt confident in their first aid abilities upon completion. Many of the candidates enjoyed the delivery of the course, commenting that they had plenty of time to practice first aid techniques repeatedly throughout the day.
