Making training meaningful can be challenging, but with a little imagination it is needn’t be. We have just completed a three day First Aid at Work course for Trees at Heart, a company of tree surgeons in Desborough, Northamptonshire. Our brief was to provide HSE approved training, but to make it relevant for the group, as it was felt that ‘an off the shelf’ course would not meet the needs of the group and cover injuries that they were likely to sustain.
We were able to match the syllabus of the Level 3 Award in First Aid to the needs of the group and delivered aspects of the course outdoors to make the content more realistic and relevant. Training props, including simulated impaled branches, were made for the course, which gave candidates the opportunity to deal with realistic situations that they are likely to encounter in their day to day work.
Overall it was a great course, with everyone passing.
